Tony Jorden

It is with deep regret that the club must share the sad news of the recent passing of Old Monmothian, Tony Jorden on the 20th October 2023 at the age of 76.

Tony, attended Monmouth School until 1966. It was there that he developed his skills as both a cricketer and rugby player. He went up to Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, where he represented the university at both rugby union and cricket. Both of which he went on to play at a 1st class level.

A Cambridge blue in both sports in 1968 and 1969, he captained the cricket side in his second year.

Both Rugby and Cricket were huge parts of his life. As a player (England, Barbarians, Blackheath, Bedford, Eastern Counties, London Counties, Cambridge University along with Essex County cricket), as a rugby coach (Wasps, London Division) and also as a long-time member of the RFU committee.

Just as his first-class cricket career was coming to an end in 1970, Jorden was called up to the England rugby union team, the leading points scorer in the 1977/78 campaign, Jorden was capped twice for England – against Wales and Scotland in the 1975 Five Nations Championship.

Away from rugby, Jorden was a keen cricketer and featured for Essex from 1966-70 and also represented Bedfordshire.

He retired from rugby in 1979-80 to focus on coaching junior rugby across Hertfordshire. Latterly, he became an England selector.
